Sacred Legends and History of the 9 Navagraha Temples
The nine planetary shrines of Tamil Nadu are not modern creations; they represent over a thousand years of continuous Chola, Pallava, and Vijayanagara architectural grandeur and intense spiritual devotion.
Mythological Origin of the Circuit
According to the sthala puranas, sage Kalava Muni was suffering from severe ailments and prayed fervently to the nine grahas (planetary deities). Pleased with his penance, the grahas granted him relief.
However, Lord Brahma felt the grahas had exceeded their divine jurisdiction by altering mortal karma and cursed them to contract afflictions on Earth. The nine deities performed severe penance towards Lord Shiva in the sacred forest of Thirumangalakkudi (near Mayiladuthurai). Pleased with their dedication, Lord Shiva granted them relief and declared that anyone who worships them in their designated Cauvery delta shrines would be blessed and relieved of planetary doshas.
Architectural Heritage
Most of these temples were built and expanded during the Golden Age of the Imperial Cholas (9th – 12th century CE):
- Sooriyanar Kovil: Built by King Kulothunga Chola I (1075–1120 CE). It is unique because it is dedicated purely to the Sun God, with individual sanctums for all eight other planets facing Him.
- Vaitheeswaran Koil: Famed for its Chola bronze sculptures, ancient stone inscriptions, and the holy Siddhamirtha Theertham.
- Thiruvenkadu: Mentioned extensively in the Sangam literature and celebrated for its monumental Agora Murthi bronze sculpture.
